On Tuesday, February 7, 2023, by Zoom, at 11am EST, the Modern Egyptian Studies Forum (MESF) will host a panel discussion with the American University of Cairo Press (“AUC Press”) about publishing on modern Egypt. This panel will feature talks from Nadia Naqib, AUC Press Senior Acquisitions Editor; Sue Ostfield, AUC Press Marketing Manager, North America; Linda Herrera, author of Educating Egypt: Civic Values and Ideological Struggles (AUC Press 2022) and social anthropologist in the Department of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and Khalid Ikram, economist and former director at the World Bank, who has edited with Heba Nassar The Egyptian Political Economy in the Twenty-First Century: the Hard Road to Inclusive Prosperity (AUC Press 2022). Panelists will reflect on the publishing process, particularly as it relates to scholarship on modern Egypt.

We expect this event to appeal to scholars at various career stages – from graduate students to emeritus professors – who are likely to have a variety of book projects in mind. Panelists will share their experiences in the publishing process while addressing topics such as marketing and publicity, publishing in translation, and recent trends in Egyptian studies publishing. Following the panelists’ presentations we invite participants to pose questions and share experiences about the publishing process.

The Modern Egyptian Studies Forum is an online event series and scholarly community dedicated to the study of modern Egypt. Events organized by the Forum have included book talks, thematic conversations, and discussions on archival access, pedagogy, and publishing. It welcomes scholars at various career stages, from graduate students to emeritus professors. For recordings of recent events see Events.
